Ordo Amoris | Rightly Ordered Loves | Dr. David Talcott

"When JD Vance invoked ordo amoris—the ordering of loves—in a recent interview, the internet predictably erupted. But should it have? This nearly universal Christian principle, championed by Augustine and Bavinck, holds that love and duty are rightly ordered—God first, then family, community, and nation. Rejecting this leads not to utopia but to the guillotine. In this video, we explore the theological and ethical foundations of ordo amoris, why modern egalitarianism stumbles over it, and how denying it fuels the radical politics of our age. First, the basics—then, the guillotine. Dr. Talcott is a Fellow of Philosophy and the Graduate Dean of the college. He joined the faculty in 2023, having taught at The King's College (NY) for twelve years, first as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy and then as an Associate Professor of Philosophy. He teaches the junior-year philosophy colloquia, covering the history of philosophy from antiquity to the present. His research focuses on ancient Greek philosophy, particularly Plato, though he also works on a range of ethical topics.
