"Compared to the USA, illustrators in Europe have not shown the same enthusiasm for what in general could be termed realistic painting. So Italian born Fortunino Matania is a relatively rare example of someone who shunned the modernist stylistic innovations of the 20th century, and used his talent for painting humanity and the world with remarkable representational authority for the duration of his particularly long career.
