The Illustrations of Howard Pyle

"For many years Howard Pyle has been widely recognized as a major figure in the early development of American illustration. His reputation is based not only on his groundbreaking work in the second half of the 19th and early years of the 20th century, but arguably just as much on the many slightly younger illustrators he taught who went on to define the early 20th century in the USA. Among them were N. C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Elenore Abbott, Ethel Franklin Betts, Harvey Dunn, Thornton Oakley, Violet Oakley, Elizabeth Shippen Green, and Jessie Willcox Smith. So I think it's high time he had a video to himself." from the video introduction

Pyle studied at the Art Students’ League, New York City, and first attracted attention by his line drawings after the style of Albrecht Dürer. His magazine and book illustrations are among the finest of the turn-of-the-century period in the Art Nouveau style. Pyle wrote original children’s stories as well as retelling old fairy tales. Many of Pyle’s children’s stories, illustrated by the author with vividness and historical accuracy, have become classics—most notably The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (1883); Otto of the Silver Hand (1888); Jack Ballister’s Fortunes (1895); and his own folktales, Pepper & Salt (1886), The Wonder Clock (1888), and The Garden Behind the Moon (1895)..." from the article: Howard Pyle American writer and illustrator
